Currie savors his tasty new roles

Holly Dale playfully calls actor Gordon Currie one of her "sexy boys."
Currie, a potential movie star who is starting to win lead roles in smaller films, plays the charming rogue vampire in Dale's darkly funny Dracula picture Blood And Donuts.
Dale teases that she enjoyed seeing the long-haired, handsome, washboard-tummied, 30-year-old Currie stripped naked for the bathtub scenes.
"I kept him in there a long, long time," says the Toronto-based filmmaker with a grin. Currie's co-star, Justin Louis, is another of the "sexy boys," she adds.

I have no comment about that because she includes me," Currie says sheepishly about Dale's tease. "I said to her: I don't know what sexy is. You tell me!"
But Currie really does care. He just left those details to Dale. What directly appealed was the chance to play a complex, humanistic vampire in a comedy. He liked Dale's spin on it. "You have to trust the director. We had fun with it."
Currie, who was born in Vancouver, spent five years trying to launch his career in Los Angeles. He is now based in New York and finds himself frequently working in Canada on TV and film projects. He is at a point where a movie such as Blood & Donuts can only help in his steady career climb.
"It's not going to be an important film as far as advancing cinema in Canada, but it has its place. Hopefully, it's entertaining. Hopefully, people will get some chuckles out of it.

Entertainment has its place."
As for the revival in vampire movies, Currie is delighted. Blood & Donuts follows a spate of films such as Hollywood's Interview With The Vampire and launches a new flood of them over the course of the winter.
"The vampire genre has been explored this whole century in film. It will be explored eternally because it examines sensuality in a different way. It is very much the dark side, which I think is very hip in the 1990s, because it deals with blood." Because of disease, people are afraid of their own blood now. "Big time!" says Currie.
Meanwhile, Currie is new big time. Having spent time working in mills in British Columbia - "I come from a weird but very Canadian background; I'm a very B.C. kind of guy!" - and having spent eight months dressed up as Ronald McDonald for kiddie parties in L.A., Currie appreciates that his career is now advancing.
He just finished shooting a co-starring role as a Clint Eastwoodish drifter in the independent American movie Ripe on location in South Carolina. Currie plays a 25-year-old motorcycle rider who arrives in a small town, takes a part-time job at a military base and hooks up with 14-year-old twin sisters, one of whom dotes on him.
"It's very dangerous territory," Currie says of the themes. "There are some very dark issues that are explored there." But Ripe is produced, directed and written by women, "so it's told from a really different point of view."
Ripe is expected to make its world premiere at the Sundance film festival early in 1996. Like Blood & Donuts, the Ripe role was one that Currie couldn't pass up, although he feels that his outside career advice from agents and managers conflicts with his instincts.
"Honestly and truly, I've been trying to figure things out. But what it comes down to is the classic: Be true to yourself and do what you want to do!"
